 PRESS STATEMENT

OPPRESSION IN LAS ANOD

TIX/00104/2018
May 30, 2018

The Government of Puntland hereby informs the people of Somalia, the international community and the reputable agencies renowned for advocating for human rights, such as Human Rights Watch and the other international organisations, that the residents of Las Anod are currently being subjected to the gravest of abuses and this should not be tolerated.

Genocidal acts of violence are currently being perpetrated in Las Anod, a town in the Sool region, including arbitrary detention and the indiscriminate beating of the local residents. It cannot be tolerated that innocent mothers, high school students, and other civilians are treated in such a savage manner. Hundreds of ordinary civilians have been rounded up and taken from their homes. These people are currently being held against their will, and without charge, in the jails and football grounds of Las Anod. There are also a large number of civilians currently being treated in the hospitals and clinics of Las Anod for gunshot wounds that have been sustained as a result of the indescriminate use of live fire on unarmed civilians. Four of the wounded have now succumbed to their injuries.

The Government of Puntland asserts that these reckless and genocidal acts of violence waged against the civilian population of Las Anod committed by the militia from Hargeisa, has the sole purpose of harrassing and forcibly displacing the civilian population. So efficient has this militia been in their gruesome task that the jails of Las Anod are currently in overcapacity as they have been overflowed with civilian prisoners. This is occurring during the Blessed Month of Ramadan, during a time of the year when the temperature is very hot, and this will likely have direct and negative implications for the health of the unfortunate people currently being crammed into the jails of Las Anod.

The Government of Puntland reasserts that the authorities in Hargeisa are solely responsible for the detentions, deaths, and injuries of the civilian population. The authorities in Hargeisa shall have to account for these deeds and their continued attacks and daily harassment of the civilian population of Las Anod.
