Emirates Should must keep their hands off the Jubaland Elections 2019
It has come to our attention that United Arab Emirates (UAE) Delegations made a secretive visit to Kismayu
this week and held closed door meetings with the Kismayu regime leader – Ahmed Madoobe with the sole
aim of supporting his re-election. At this meeting it was agreed that the parties should meet again later in
Nairobi, to seal the support of UAE to Ahmed Madoobe’s campaign and make a first cash contribution of USD
5 million. It has also come to our knowledge that UAE will be using the visit to lobby in the region to support
the Madoobe’s campaign.
Somalia, and the Federal Members States of Somalia need political stability. However, on the contrary,
external interference of this kind risks undermining both stability and security, and the prospects of
democratization will remain an even more distant prospect.
We therefore want to raise this early warning against such external interferences in our internal political
processes, in the hope that the international actors and friends of Somalia will refrain from, and do what they
can to stop external interference in our internal political process, for the sake of achieving political stability and
security.
